you can't have your shield up if you intend to backstab. make sure to not have it raised. position yourself behind his legs (not his chest). I tend to find it easier to backstab if i approach from their right.

R2 is also pretty good as it has good stagger capability. The L2 combo is really weak and only good for style. The L1 combo will always be its bread and butter.
